Golden Ray or MV Golden Ray was a multi-purpose cargo vessel that capsized in St. Simons Sound near the Port of Brunswick, Georgia, United States, on September 8, 2019. The ship was carrying around 4,000 vehicles at the time of the incident. Golden Ray is a 200-meter-long vessel owned by Hyundai Glovis, a South Korean shipping company.
The ship capsized shortly after leaving the port, and all crew members were safely rescued. However, the vessel remained in a precarious position in the sound, causing concerns about potential environmental damage due to fuel and oil leakage. Efforts to stabilize and remove the ship became a long and complex process.
Multiple salvage companies and government agencies were involved in the operation to extract the vessel. After months of planning and preparation, the wreck removal began in November 2020. It involved sectioning the ship into smaller parts using sawing technique and lifting them individually using cranes onto barges for transportation. The process was challenging due to the unstable conditions, strong currents, and the size of the ship.
As of September 2021, the salvage operation is still ongoing, with a significant portion of the vessel yet to be removed. Environmental protection measures have been in place to minimize the impact on the surrounding ecosystem during the operation.
The cause of the incident is still under investigation, and legal proceedings related to the incident are also ongoing. The incident attracted significant media attention and highlighted the challenges associated with maritime salvage operations and the importance of proper ship stability and safety protocols.
